Only then you will discover details which aren’t listed in any tour guidebook about Trogir – details on the stone family houses, clotheslines hanging on original stone hedges, flowers growing out of the cracks in the walls, elderly ladies talking to their cats… All the small unwritten details that make this town and the romance of it alive. These 10 steps through Trogir will allow you to experience this magnificent town in all its beauty.
Experience the town, meet its masters and catch those moments following the next 10 steps:
- We begin our tour in front of the TOWN HALL to admire its representative facade and discover the secrets it hides in its charming courtyard. Then we continue towards THE CHURCH of ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST.
- Exploring one of the most picturesque streets in Trogir you will hear the story of Kairos, the Greek god of the happy moment kept in the MONASTERY OF ST. NICHOLAS from the 11th century, the oldest enclosed monastery in Croatia..
- Passing through the SOUTH TOWN GATE with original wooden doors from the 16th century, we arrive at the PROMENADE (or Riva, as we call it) to enjoy in the typical Mediterranean view of the sea, palm trees and anchored ships.
- Walking along the promenade, come to the CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF ST. DOMINIC, a national shrine of the blessed Augustin Kažotić, a bishop from Trogir.
- Take a look at the FORTRESS KAMERLENGO and learn about the life in Trogir during a long period of the Venetian rule. Continue your walk to MARMONT’S GLORIETTE and then to ST. MARK’S TOWER.
- Walking through the medieval streets of Trogir will make you feel like you are travelling through time. Find out more about the noble families, their palaces and the stone fragments they collected to show their respect for the past
- We will walk through the complex of GARAGNIN-FANFOGNA PALACE, today’s TOWN MUSEUM, which houses a permanent exhibition about the history of the town from the Greek period to the present. The main entrance of the town, the 17th-century NORTH TOWN GATE, is located near the palace.
- We continue down to the main street to reach the grand and small ĆIPIKO PALACES. They were the homes of one of the most renowned noble families in Trogir.
- The pearl of the town, THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT LAWRENCE, is located on the other side of the main street. Its construction lasted over 400 years and brought together the best artists and architects of those times. We will especially focus on MASTER RADOVAN’S masterpiece, the Portal which places Trogir at the very top of the art world.
- The walking tour ends in the heart of the town, on the main square, where we will visit the TOWN LODGE, former courthouse, now the place where you can hear famous Dalmatian singers called Klapa performing traditional Dalmatian songs. Also, you can visit the old CHURCH OF SAINT SEBASTIAN with a clock tower and the PINACOTECA (art gallery), where you can see renowned works of sacral art.
